The Indian Air Force (IAF) AFCAT 02 2026 Recruitment is one of the most prestigious officer entry schemes in India, offering graduate candidates the opportunity to serve as Short Service Commission (SSC) officers in the Flying Branch, Ground Duty Technical Branch, and Ground Duty Non-Technical Branch. With 142 plus vacancies including Flying Branch (35 posts), Administration (62 posts), Weapon Systems (26 posts), Accounts, Education, and Meteorology branches, AFCAT offers multiple entry points matching different academic backgrounds.
For candidates from Assam and Northeast India, the IAF represents an extraordinary career opportunity. The region has produced many distinguished Air Force officers over the decades, and the IAF actively recruits from Northeast India through outreach programmes, NCC camps, and academic partnerships. The salary of Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month at Level-10 Pay Matrix, plus Military Service Pay (MSP) of Rs. 15,500 and various flying or duty allowances, makes IAF one of the highest-paying career options available to graduates in India.
AFCAT Examination Pattern and Preparation
The AFCAT online examination covers Verbal Ability in English, Numerical Ability, Reasoning and Military Aptitude, and General Awareness. The exam is of 2 hours duration with 100 questions carrying 3 marks each and a negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer. Previous year AFCAT question papers are readily available online and are the best starting point for preparation. The General Awareness section focuses on defence-related current affairs, aviation history, sports, and general science.
AFSB Interview Process
Candidates who clear the written examination attend a 5-day AFSB (Air Force Selection Board) at Mysuru, Varanasi, or Gandhinagar. The AFSB tests personality, leadership, and officer-like qualities through group discussions, psychological tests, and interviews. After AFSB, medical examination determines final fitness. NCC C-certificate holders from the Air Wing qualify for NCC Special Entry with no written test required. Online registration opens 20 May 2026 at afcat.edcil.co.in with last date 19 June 2026.
